Mystery Of Usain Bolts Sprinting Speed

Physicists unravel mystery of Usain Bolt's speed

Usain Bolt is a big guy as far as sprinters go, and his 6-foot-5 frame doesn't exactly make him a model of aerodynamic perfection. But as his time of 9.58 seconds in a 100-meter race in 2009 proves, he is the fastest human on the planet.
Even physicists who pored over every frame of that race are wowed after translating Bolt the runner into Bolt the mathematical model for a study in the European Journal of Physics. He uses an almost inhuman amount of energy to overcome air resistance, thanks in part to "extraordinary stride length" and "lots of fast twitch muscle fibers," a Cambridge physicist tells the BBC.
Or just think of him as "truly a freak of nature," writes George Dorsky at io9.com.
Some of the eye-popping findings:
  • Only 8% of the energy Bolt expended in the race was used for motion; the rest was to overcome the aerodynamic drag of his large frame, explains InsideScience.
  • His maximum power output came less than a second into the race; figure about 3.5 horsepower, or enough to power a "large vacuum cleaner," reports PopSci.
  • His top speed came about 7 seconds into the race at around 27 mph.
  • Even without the slight tailwind he had that day in 2009, he would have busted the record with a speed of 9.68 seconds, say the physicists.
All of which might beg the question, Is he doping? At Let'sRun.com, Robert Johnson makes a strong case for Bolt being clean. He's been busting records since he was a boy, and he may one of those rare athletes — think Babe Ruth in his day or LeBron James today — who is simply way better than his peers because of his rare physical attributes.
In Bolt's case, he "is huge but has the coordination and quickness of sprinters who are normally much smaller." In short, "he's a tall freak."
Meanwhile, one Cambridge math professor doesn't think Bolt has achieved his full potential.

Physics of the Holy Qur'an

Physics of the Holy Qur'an
Over recent years, scientists, astronomers, oceanographers and the like have been able to discover important phenomenon with the advance of science and technology. Yet the Holy Qur'an, revealed over fourteen hundred years ago, remarkably uncovered these now scientifically-established facts at a time when telescopes and similar technological advancements were not even heard of. Amazingly, the overwhelming agreement of its verses with science and modern-day scientific discoveries continues to be proven to this day.
Below are but a few examples that allow us to conceive Allah’s infinite power and knowledge clearly manifest in His miraculous book, the Holy Qur'an.

The Barriers Between Adjacent Seas

Recently, oceanographers have discovered that when two neighboring or different seas meet, there is a barrier between them such that they do not mix, with each sea having its own temperature, salinity, and density. For example, the Mediterranean Sea water is warm, saline, and less dense in comparison to the Atlantic Ocean water. Due to the difference in the density of the waters, the force of surface tension prevents the seas from intermixing, regardless of all the large waves, strong currents, and tides that they encounter.
As the human eye cannot differentiate between two adjacent seas, this scientific finding was only made possible with the use of advanced scientific equipment. Amazingly, the Quran told mankind of the barrier between two seas long before the invention of such equipment:
He has let loose the two seas, converging together, with a barrier between them they do not break through. (Qur'an, 55:19-20)

Formation of Rain

Meteorologists have recently determined the details of cloud function and rain formation with the aid of advanced equipment such as satellites, planes, and computers. They have found that cumulonimbus clouds go through three stages to produce rain: the clouds are pushed along by the wind, the small clouds then join together forming a larger cloud, and these in turn gradually stack up vertically due to updrafts in the center of the cloud pushing upwards. The vertical growth results in the cloud stretching into cooler regions, where water droplets and hail begin to formulate. When these water drops and hail become too heavy for the cloud to carry, they fall to the ground as rain/hail.
We learn this process of rain formation from science today, yet Allah the Almighty enlightened us over 14 hundred years ago:
Have you not seen how Allah drives along the clouds, then joins them together, then makes them into a stack, and then you see the rain come out of it? (Qur'an, 24:43)

Hail and Lightning

Allah has further said in the Holy Qur'an:
And He sends down from the sky mountain masses [of clouds] with cold hail in them, striking with it anyone He wills and averting it from anyone He wills. The brightness of His lightning almost blinds the sight. (Qur'an, 24:43)
Meteorologists have found the cumulonimbus clouds that shower hail, which stack vertically as previously mentioned, generally reach a height of 25,000 to 30,000 feet (and beyond) like "mountains", as the verse indicates. The verse also confirms modern science's general claim that hail storms are associated with the generation of lightning – yet another relatively new discovery by mankind.

Darkness of Deep Seas and Internal Waves

Allah tells us:
Or [the unbelievers' state] is like the darkness of a fathomless sea, which is covered by waves above which are waves above which are clouds, layers of darkness, one upon the other. If he puts out his hand, he can scarcely see it. (Qur'an, 24:40)
Today we know that some hundreds of meters in a deep sea there is indeed darkness, such that below1000 meters, there is no light at all. As humans cannot descend to the deep, dark depths of the seas without the aid of submarines or other special equipment, the discovery of the darkness of deep seas was only found when the necessary equipment became available in recent years.
By stating that the deep waters of seas and oceans are "covered by waves upon which are waves upon which are clouds", Allah also tells us of the existence of internal waves that are not actually visible on the surface. It is clear the second set of waves mentioned are the surface waves we do see, because as mentioned in the verse, above these waves are clouds. Indeed, scientists find today there are internal waves occurring on density interfaces, between layers of different density waters (deeper water has greater density than waters above it). These internal waves could only be discerned by scientists with the aid of advanced, powerful equipment that can detect temperature and/or salinity changes at a given location in the sea – clearly not possible during the time the Qur'an was sent down!

The Sky as a Protected Roof

And we made the heaven/sky a well-protected roof, yet still they turn away from Our Signs. (Qur'an, 21:32)
Without us realizing it, the protective nature of the atmosphere allows us and all other living things to survive in safety. Amongst other things, our atmosphere protects life on Earth by warming the surface through heat retention (the greenhouse effect), reducing temperature extremes between day and night, and destroying the millions of meteors as they approach the Earth. If the atmosphere did not exist, these meteors would fall through and certainly make the Earth an inhabitable place.
We also now know of the ozone layer (discovered only in 1913), which is a layer of gas of the Earth's atmosphere surrounding it some 15 to 35 km above its surface. This 20 km wide layer acts as a natural filter, allowing only harmless and useful rays of light to pass through while absorbing 93-99 percent of the sun's harmful high-frequency ultraviolet rays which, if passed through to the Earth, would be extremely damaging to life. However, near-ultraviolet rays are particularly important for the photosynthesis of plants and thus, remarkably, are partially let in by the atmosphere to allow for their survival.
The amazing attributes of this protective and protected atmosphere that Allah has created for us has been established through scientific research centuries after the revelation of the Qur'an.

The Expansion of the Universe

Allah describes the expansion of the universe in the following verse:
And it is We who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it. (Qur'an, 51:47)
The word "heaven" is used in various other places in the Qur'an, referring to outer space and the wider universe. Today, modern science has confirmed that the universe is indeed constantly expanding; however, it is a discovery established only in the 20th century. Until then, even the greatest of minds such as Albert Einstein claimed the universe either a) had its confines, or b) was in an infinite space. The third alternative (the actual truth) of a dynamically expanding universe, realised by scientists after much research and deliberation and only after the invention of the telescope, was incredibly revealed to us by Allah over fourteen centuries ago!
The Holy Qur'an is filled with numerous such scientific statements articulated in a very succinct yet profound manner, which, due to the extremely low level of scientific and technological knowledge, could never have been known to man during the time of its revelation. As science continues to progress, the verses of the Qur'an continue to reveal the miracles of this divine book. Indeed it is the truth, the word of the Almighty Lord, who is the Originator of everything, and the One who encompasses all with His infinite knowledge.

Top 10 Famous Work of Albert Eistein
Albert Einstein a Nobel laureate and probably the world’s greatest theoretical physicist ever played a significant role in revolutionizing the understanding of Physics all over the world. Regarded as the Father of Modern Physics, Einstein was born in Germany in 1879. He was a professor at the Berlin Academy of Sciences before being affiliated to Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton in the year 1933. He later became an American citizen in the year 1940 living there upto his death in 1955. With more than 300 scientific papers to his credit, Albert Einstein was the most significant physicist of the 20th century. Though he was the one to suggest the study in this area he wasn’t for the use of Nuclear weapons. With so much contribution to the field of Physics; it is a herculean task to narrow down to those that were most illustrious and significant of all. Nevertheless; below is a list containing the same!

10. Wormholes:

It is a concept which is depicted by Einstein-Rosen Bridge way back in 1935. Wormhole, in physics, is a hypothetical feature of space and time continuum that is a path through the continuum itself. Though there are no practical proofs for the same; in spite of this ample evidence exists theoretically to validate the conjecture of their existence. It is a derivative of Einstein’s theory of relativity and basically is a space-time curvature which joins two different and far-off times or places.

9. Unified field theory:

Einstein illustrated the ‘Unified Field Theory’ in his paper ‘On the Generalized Theory of Gravitation’ in the year 1950. It was his vision to unify gravity with other laws of Physics and hence the endeavor towards this theory. He worked through most of the latter part of his career on this but his efforts were unsuccessful. He was so deeply engrossed in it that other significant advances and events in mainstream physics were ignored by him. Basically the Unified Field Theory was a series of experiments conducted by him to accommodate electromagnetism in his geometric theory of gravitation.

8. Adiabatic principle and action-angle variables:

The 1910s was a decade when a lot of transformation and discoveries unfolded in the field of Quantum Mechanics. The principles of Quantum Mechanics developed by Einstein formed the basis of Neils Bohr’s explanation of the motion of electrons in atoms and the periodic table of the elements. Einstein showed in 1911 that the adiabatic principle orchestrated by Wilhelm Wien showed that the quantity that has been quantized in a mechanical motion must be an adiabatic variant.

7. General relativity and the Equivalence Principle:

The tool of modern Astrophysics; General Relativity is a Gravitational Theory that was developed by Albert Einstein in the years between 1907 and 1915. The observed gravitational attraction between masses is a result of the warping of space and time by those masses. This theory forms the basis of the present perception of Black Hole. Einstein published an article in the year 1908 where he explained the Equivalence Principle which says that the rules of special relativity applies for a free falling observer as free fall is an inertial motion. In accurate scientific terms as put forth by Albert Einstein Equivalence principle states that the weak equivalence principle holds, and that ‘The outcome of any local non-gravitational experiment in a freely falling laboratory is independent of the velocity of the laboratory and its location in spacetime.’

6. Schrödinger gas model:

The man behind Schrödinger gas model was not only Schrödinger himself but Albert Einstein too. However the latter declined a request from Schrödinger to have his name included as co-author for the paper. Albert Einstein suggested Schrödinger to treat energy levels of a gas as a whole instead of treating them as individual molecules; an extension of the application of Planck’s idea. Using Einstein’s idea, Schrödinger derived the thermodynamic properties of a semi classical ideal gas using the Boltzmann distribution in a paper.

5. Quantized atomic vibrations:

Albert Einstein proposed the Einstein Solid Model where if each atom is a lattice in an independent 3D quantum harmonic oscillator and all atoms oscillate with the same frequency; each atom oscillated independently. This model showed that Quantum Mechanics could actually solve the specific heat in Classical Mechanics. It was proposed by Albert Einstein in the year 1907 using the Planck’s quantization assumption.

4. Bose–Einstein statistics:

Commonly known as B-E statistics; it is a property in Quantum Statistics which illustrates one of the ways of how a collection of indistinguishable particles may occupy a set of available discrete energy states. These very statistics are used in present day to describe the behavior of a collection of bosons. In 1924 Satyendra Nath Bose presented to Einstein a statistical model which was translated and submitted by the latter. The Bose-Einstein Condensate phenomenon was also derived around that time. The Bose-Einstein statistics apply only to particles that do not follow Pauli Exclusion Principle.

3. Wave–particle duality:

All particles exhibit both wave and particle properties is what is stated by Wave Particle Duality. An important concept of Quantum Mechanics; this is a paradox and is often described as a basic Universal property. Albert Einstein presented a paper in 1909 where he first provided explanation for the Wave-particle duality. Infact the photon concept was derived out of this paper. Einstein postulated that electrons can receive energy from electromagnetic field only in discrete portions.

2. Photons and energy quanta:

Albert Einstein proposed that light consists of localized particles in a paper in the year 1905.This idea was rejected by scientists all round the fraternity including Planck and Neils Bohr and it wasn’t until the year 1919 that it was actually accepted after Robert Millikan’s detailed experiments. It was concluded by Albert Einstein that each wave of frequency f is associated with a collection of photons with energy hf each, where h is Planck’s constant. This went on to explain the Photoelectric effect and several experimental results. It was for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect that Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921.

1. Theory of relativity and E = mc²:

Albert Einstein is known all over the world for the famous equation – E = mc². One may not really know what the theory actually is but the fact that it was Einstein behind it is recognized universally. He published a paper “Zur Elektrodynamik bewegter Körper” i.e, ‘On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies’ in September 1905. It brings together Maxwell’s equations for both electricity and magnetism with the world of Quantum Mechanics. This theory explained in the paper was later christened as Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity. He was the one who developed both the special and general theories of Relativity. It wasn’t accepted with ease and was rather contentious for several years before being accepted by the scientific fraternity.

Mind Blowing Facts About Physics

The contribution of Physics in unraveling mysteries of the universe and its constituents has been tremendous and greatly remarkable. Discoveries made by the Physicists over the years have helped us a great deal in understanding both micro and macro cosmos. The discoveries, such as Planck’s constant and natural unit of light, have opened the Pandora’s Box around us to reveal other facts as well. Here is a list of top 10 mind blowing facts about Physics that will literally surprise you.

10. Light waves don’t always move in straight lines:

It is generally believed that light waves only move in straight lines. However, as per the recent research in 2010 using computer controlled hologram, it has been proved that light, too, can get twisted into knots. According to the study, when light passes through the hologram, it twists into different shapes, producing multiple knots.

9. Unbelievable hydrogen energy:

It is estimated that Sun burns around 620 million metric tons of hydrogen/second into 616 million metric tons of helium. Out of this total volume, around 4 million tons of mass enters the solar system. Furthermore, only about 3.6 pounds of the mass reaches our earth. Had even 1 percent of the energy produced out of fusion reached us, what would have been the scenario?

8.  Human radiations:

As per the recent studies and discoveries in the field of Physics, a nude human body constantly radiates around 1000 watts of heat and absorbs about 900 watts. However, once the person covers his body with clothes, the outflow of the heat flux reduces considerably due to the exterior barrier. The amount of heat outflow from the human body is more than enough in lightning up a 100 watt bulb for some time.

7. Anti-gravity movement:

Water can easily run against the gravitational pull when moving up narrow pipes. The process is described as ‘Capillary Action’. Water moves up in the narrow spaces without any assistance and against the gravitational force. This ability of the liquid proves that gravitational force can’t control the movement of every matter present on earth. At times, other forces (Surface tension, in this case) can defeat it.

6. Viscous fluids can flow at high speeds:

It is generally believed that viscous fluids can’t flow fast enough like water – a liquid with reduced viscous level. However, some scientists went on to prove that fluids like “Ketchup” can attain high speeds, too, if constantly sheered over a period of time till they attain momentum. Once thrust is achieved, the viscous forces dwindle down considerably and free movement is observed.

5. Gravitational constant:

The standard value of the gravitational constant is 9.8 m/s^2. It must be well known to all the science students that the value is calculated from the free fall of an object at sea level. The point worth noting is that the free fall should be at latitude of 45 degrees from the base level in order to obtain this value than 90 degrees as believed by the most.

4. Air current:

The speed of wind near the surface of ocean is much lower than what is observed in the higher altitudes. The reason can be attributed to the friction it receives from the water surface. It is due to this reason that most birds fly at a higher altitude. They manipulate the wind power in order to use least amount of energy on flying.

3. Universe is a Computer:

On the basis of a paper published by a professor in MIT, the Universe is equivalent to a computer. The figure is roughly equal to 10^120 bits. The number was calculated by him on the basis of the amount of information that can be stored in a volume just before it adopts the properties of a black hole. The information can be equated to absolute entropy of the universe.
